| Cisternerne - Museum of Modern Glass Art
The underground museum
The Museum, situated underneath the lawns of Søndermarken, offers its visitors a unique experience. The entrance is a glass pyramid from which visitors can go down to the 2800 m2 large exhibition area. 50 glass works by different Danish artists are placed in the interesting rooms completely shutting any daylight out. The exhibition rooms used to be an old water supply plant built in the mid 1800s, containing 16 million litres of water. The plant was to both meet the demands of the growing population in Copenhagen and supply the city with much needed cleaner water. The reservoir was not completely drained of water until 1981 and in 2001 the glass museum opened. Two of the three reservoirs are open to the audience.
30 years of glass art
The interplay between the special rooms, the art light and the Museum’s many glass works creates a unique museum experience. The Museum’s collections contain 50 glass- and art works created by several of the most famous Danish artist within the last 30 years. Among these are artists such as Robert Jacobsen, Carl Henning Pedersen, Per Kirkeby, Bjørn Nørgård, Erik A. Frandsen, Svend Dalgård, Trondur Patursson, Arne Haugen Sørensen and Peter Brandes. The Museum also features exhibitions of Danish and foreign artists such as Magne Furuholmen, Adam Raft and Tróndur Patursson since 2001.
Picnic basket and elephants
After a visit below ground a walk in the surrounding parks, Søndermarken and Frederiksberg Park, can be recommended. Here is ample space for picnicking and relaxing. For families with children - visit the nearby Copenhagen Zoo.
