Greve Museum: museum covering 250 years of local- and developmental, cultural history

Hedebo area farmhouse with Danish agricultural garden

Greve Museum is situated in the centre of the Hedebo area, which is the woodless area covering the triangle between Copenhagen, Roskilde and Køge. The Museum is housed in a typical yellow, four winged, Hedebo farm from 1826, Grevegaard, originally situated in Greve village. In connection with the rearranging of the agricultural areas in the area, Grevegaard was moved outside the village, where it now stands surrounded by fields. Connected to the farmhouse is also a large beautiful agricultural garden with parterre flowerbeds and fruit trees.

From source of food to suburb

Greve Museum is a museum of local history, responsible for investigating, maintaining and communicating the last 250 years’ of history from the Greve area. The Museum works around four overall themes: natural resources and ways of life within agriculture, gardening, and fishing; the beach area as recreational area for people from the city; from open land to suburb and Grevegaard and its history. The first three themes make up a chronology of the development of the area, but also have relevance for the present. The last theme, of Grevegaard, primarily focuses on the farm housing the museum, as a large and typical farm of the Hedebo area. Across these themes, special focus is put on the relation between the area and the capital, Copenhagen, which has a large influence on the area’s development and characteristics.

Exhibitions and events

The museum has two permanent exhibitions and changing special exhibitions featuring different sides of the area’s history, and exhibitions featuring art or crafts. One of the wings houses a cosy café and museum shop, functioning as an integrated part of the Museum. In the old rooms earlier housing the farm workers, have been turned into an office and reading room for Greve Lokalhistoriske Arkiv (Greve archive of local history). The Museum also arranges many events for the both children and adults. The events are connected to the general themes of the Museum, the changing special exhibitions or to the Museum’s activities focusing on cultural environments. Events are also arranged for children, families with children and grand parents in connection with holidays and school holidays.
